How Uniper achieves greater audit transparency and impact
In the newest installment of our Spotlight on Success series, hear from Sonja Bartel (Senior Vice President of Internal Audit) of Uniper on how her team uses AuditBoard to drive collaboration and efficiency, significantly enhancing the overall impact of their function.
Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, Uniper is an energy generator specializing in providing flexible, low-carbon power across Europe and trades energy worldwide. After a poor experience with a manual, mostly administrative audit tool, Uniper’s internal audit team transformed their day-to-day approach by switching to an audit solution that helped drive greater process efficiencies across their audit lifecycle. Discover how AuditBoard helped:
- Drive improved collaboration and communication among audit stakeholders in a hybrid work environment.
- Achieve greater audit transparency for everyone involved, auditors, collaborators, and management, with configurable dashboards that provide real-time status updates.
- Improve Uniper’s client and auditor satisfaction with a more seamless user experience.

Tell us a little about Uniper and some of the challenges you faced in your previous manual environment.
Sonja Bartel (Senior Vice President of Internal Audit): My team at Uniper conducts steering tasks, including quality assurance, board reporting, audit, and risk committee reporting. We are also responsible for conducting corporate investigations and digitalizing internal processes. With our old tool, we faced several challenges; it was not a state-of-the-art tool at all, with no AI or innovative features – we had to build solutions around that audit tool. We used it primarily as an administrative tool, resulting in low client and auditor satisfaction.
How has AuditBoard improved your processes?
Sonja Bartel (Senior Vice President of Internal Audit): "Compared to other competitors, AuditBoard had a very high client satisfaction score and better testing features. The platform is very effective in mirroring our audit cycle in terms of our processes; it is also very good for collaborating with stakeholders in a single source of truth. We use AuditBoard to document all our audits, advisories, and other forms of engagement that we conduct. We utilize it for audit budgeting, resourcing, and documentation. We also mirror some processes beyond auditing, such as risk assessments. Another significant benefit is the dashboards, which we can provide to our stakeholders and the board. Ultimately, with AuditBoard, we are moving toward our future vision of embedding other tools into a single source of truth for more AI-generated and supervised risk monitoring."
